FAQs & Resources
What are Subluxations?
A “subluxation” is a misalignment of a vertebra. The vertebrae make up the bony structure of the spine enclosing and protecting the spinal cord. These misalignments can irritate and in some cases actually put pressure on the nerves that exit the spinal cord on their way to the various tissues of the body. Left unchecked, subluxations may lead to pain, loss of function and even illness.
Are all patients adjusted the same way?
No. Dr. Brennan evaluates each patient’s unique spinal problem and develops an individual course of care. The resulting recommendations are based upon years of training and experience. Each patient’s care is tailored to meet their specific needs and goals. Dr. Brennan’s training in many different techniques provides many ways to receive effective adjustments.
Can I adjust myself?
No. Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately. It is possible to turn or bend or twist in certain ways to create a “popping” sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. This type of joint manipulation may be counterproductive, often making an already unstable spine even more unstable, and can sometimes result in aggravating your problem. The “popping” or “cracking” sound is actually just the release of gases from the joint fluid. Some styles of adjustments can be made without this sound, although often this sound does accompany certain adjustments.
Does chiropractic care require a referral from an MD?
Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health professionals in every province in Canada. This means that patients can consult them directly. However, Dr. Brennan often refers to and works closely with medical doctors and other health care professionals. Dr. Brennan wants to be part of your health team to help you achieve your health goals.
Why would children need chiropractic care?
Since stress can be put on the spine during the birthing process, many parents have their newborns checked for vertebral subluxation. Since 65% of a person’s neurological development occurs in the first year of life, many parents want to have their baby’s nervous system functioning at its best. Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are adapted for the child’s spine. Very light pressure is used. Dr. Brennan always demonstrates this pressure to parents so they are comfortable with the treatment for their children. Chiropractic care has been known to have some success with children who have colic, constipation, ear infections, reflux and poor sleeping habits.
